Laser Tag ~ Round 2

Laser tag is such a fun way to celebrate your birthday!

It's also a delicious way to eat your cake!

This cake has the vests and guns made out of fondant.

The sides show the maze of each teams color and getting to the home base of each color to earn points.

Hope your team won Matthew!
Happy Birthday!

17 holes anyone?

What do you get a 17 year old who loves golf?

A golf cake.....of course!

Lance's mom found several golf themed cakes online that she liked and we took the elements that she liked best from them and came up with this design.

Since golfing is an 18 hole game.... I thought having the flag to make this "hole" be his age was very appropriate!

It is iced in buttercream with a fondant "green", golf bag and flag. I even painted the golf clubs with silver lustre dust!
The golf ball on the board is molded from white chocolate!

Fore!

Anchors Aweigh First Birthday

First Birthdays!  I just love them!

I get to make TWO cakes.  One for the party and one for the baby.

Anchors Aweigh is the theme for Jaxson's first birthday.  Here is what the partyware looks like.

I really took to the plate and cups with the anchor and crab, so........

Here is a side view....see the crab's eyes!

I know I say this everytime (and I guess the minute I stop saying it will be the day I stop decorating).  I had so much fun creating this cake!

How to Train your Dragon

Okay, if you haven't seen this movie....go now.....well you can't see it in theatres anymore.  So  run to the nearest store and buy the DVD.

We got to see this in the theatre in 3D when it came out.  Great story and animation.    Although, I'm pretty sure the Vikings didn't have Scottish accents.....  anyone?  I'm pretty sure they should have had Nordic accents: Swedish, Norweigan and the like.

But I digress, because you don't really make a cake out of sound!
So when John Ryan's mom said he wanted this theme.....I went to work thinking up a design.

Incorporate the mountains since most of the movie takes place near/in them.

Lots of sky and clouds since he is a flying dragon.

Of course the 2 main characters: Toothless and Hiccup.

This was the cake he had at his birthday party!
These are the cupcakes he shared with his classmates at school!

Viking hats and dragon wings!

Happy Birthday John Ryan.
Thanks for coming up with great themes....can't wait to see what you want next year!

Oh "Deer"!

I love when someone comes to me with a new idea!

Don't get me wrong, I love doing themes to match invitations or party decorations, because there is some totally cute/awesome stuff out there!

But to have an idea and then to create it is pretty darn cool.

So her hubby's turning 30 and he's a deer hunter....so....

Oh "Deer"!  Will is 30!

I love the expression I was able to get on this guy!

Of course everything always looks better in real life....(I seriously need some photography skills and a new camera!)
Not sure if you can see the shape of his mouth, but he is wide eyed and jaw dropped in his look!

Here is the side view to help you see how he is built.  He is made from RKT, then covered in buttercream and fondant.  I made his antlers from modeling chocolate hoping they would maintain their shape, but I did end up having to put a wire support in those.  I try to avoid putting non-edible things in/on cake, I worry about someone chomping down on something unexpected.

So here you go....ALMOST 100% edible.

Thanks for checking it out!

UGA Helmet

Hunter loves University of GA football.
I'm sure most boys around these here parts do.
*Say that last sentence with a good Georgian drawl please.
So a 3D helmet cake was in order for his birthday!

This is completely iced in buttercream, the accents are made from fondant.

I even added his name to personalize it for him.

I love the silver "rivet snaps"!

How much fun can you have with cake???
Go Dawgs!

LEGO!!!

Time to show you one of MY kids' birthday cakes!

Benjamin turned 10 this year and when I asked him what theme he wanted for his cake, he didn't have an immediate answer.  So I knew there was still working room for Mom to make the decision!  We decided to have a movie watching party with his friends at the new local theatre....  many ways to go here: how about the movie theme?
how about a popcorn theme?

Nah.

Then I thought about what he was asking for his birthday present.  LEGO!  He LOVES lego, he plays and builds a LOT!
So of course, it had to be a LEGO cake!

This is 100% edible.  The boys had fun at the party and of course had to play with the fondant lego men!

Happy Birthday sweet Benjamin!  I can't believe you are 10!

Monkey Love!

I really love opportunities to make 3D cakes.  It is fun to visualize it in my mind and then see it "come to life" in cake!

I had a request for a monkey/gorilla cake.  Madison really loves watching the "Tori and Dean" show and wanted to have a 3D gorilla cake like one from the birthday party of Tori and Dean's son Liam's first birthday.

I don't mind getting inspiration from other cake artists, in fact there are so many talented people out there that I wish I could be like!  But I knew that the cake from the show wasn't near cute enough for Madison.

I found this picture on Celebrity Moms blog

Of course Madison didn't need to have such a large cake, so I had to scale down and of course I set forth with my plans.

CUTE, he has to be CUTE!

This gorilla/monkey is a cake body and a rice krispie head.  Covered in chocolate buttercream icing and fondant accents.

Here is a close up of the banana he is holding.

Thanks Madison for such a great plan!  I hope you had the best birthday ever!

Reeve's Bulldozer

I love to get interesting invitations as the inspiration for a cake.

This is the sample invite for Reeve's bulldozer birthday.

I loved the construction materials, the swirls and cogs so I incorporated them into the design

The bulldozer and wood planks are made from colored chocolate and the dirt is a mixture of chocolate and plain graham cracker crusts!

A delicious triple chocolate cake with cream cheese icing.  You gotta "dig it"!

The strong logo for BSA with a touch of Christmas lights for the local troops Christmas celebration!

Chipper Jones Fan Birthday

3D cakes are fun to make!

Here is the classic baseball atop grass with team logos.

Gage is a big fan of #10 Chipper Jones, so I added the jersey and Chipper's autograph to the ball!

Watch Out!!! 40 Looks Like CHUM!!!

A fun and unique 40th celebration.
Shannon is the coach for the Lady Sharks and they wanted to get him a shark related 40th birthday.

Most 40th birthday themes play on the fact that you are OLD, or Over the Hill.

So in the realm of sharks, we went with circling sharks and stating the fact that when you're 40....you're CHUM!

Here is a close up of "Shannon" in the water and the circling shark fins.  I gave them "trails" in the "water" to help demonstrate the motion.

This is a close up view of what the sharks look like!

This is another side view.

Everyone was delighted with the cake.
Hope it was a FABULOUS party!

Fisherman's 70th Birthday

Making the exact same cake more than once....not really what I would choose to do.

But then again, getting a chance to do something similar, gives me a chance to improve my technique!

I'm guessing there are a lot of dad's and grandpa's out there that like to fish, so when they see the first cake I did with this theme, they want one just like it.

Different size cakes, different details.....different cake!
(It just looks a lot like that other one!)

I love all these MILESTONE cakes!

Laser Tag!

Laser Tag is a fun game to play with your friends on your birthday!

I made two "paths" of twists and turns to show the "laser battle" between red and blue.

I cut the boys from fondant and gave them coordinating laser guns and vests.

The "lasers" are pulled sugar from Jolly Rancher candies!
Hope you had a laserific birthday Jacob!

Under the Big Top

This is the partyware for Ava's birthday.  What a wonderful inspiration for a cake design!

A clown....

A circus elephant...

the ringmaster...
A striped tent....

and of course the marquee with the birthday girl's name "in lights"!
Happy Birthday Ava!

Firetruck Party

For Brett's 2nd birthday (click link to check out her party blog), his mom asked the local volunteer fire department to bring a truck to the house and let the kids learn and have fun! What a wonderful idea!

She also wanted a cake that would fit that theme.

So here is the top view of his cake.

And here is the front view.

And just for fun a quick close up of the panels.

Everything is edible! I used fondant and chocolate for accents. You can even tell I used OREO's for the tires!

Happy 2nd Birthday Brett!

Puppy Painter

Colin is a lucky boy.

His mom wanted him to have a special cake for his 10th birthday and when she asked him what theme he wanted, he said dachsunds!
You see they have pet dachshunds and they are so sweet.
I wanted to make a creative cake that was "interactive" with the dog.....
so here is Colin's Puppy Painted Party Cake!

The puppy walked in the paint and made his way up the cake and wrote the birthday message with his tail!

He stopped to create some graffiti on his way to the top.

I love the little pawprints and I gave the top a white bone border.

Happy 10th Colin!

Bowling Party

We have this cool new bowling/game arena Frames n Games in our area.  I have delivered several cakes to parties there, but this was the first time the cake actually matched the party activity!

I made the birthday boy's name and the bowling terms out of chocolate.  I used a fun background, because I wanted it to give the feeling of when the ball hits the pins!

I made the "wood" planks by making creases in my buttercream and then I painted some brown food coloring to give it a bit of "wood grain" feel.

Hope your birthday was a "Striking" good time Brandon

HALO

When coming up with a cake theme, especially for older kids, thinking about the things they like or the hobbies they have is a good place to start.

Patrick likes to play...
This is one of the pictures sent to me by mom. Master Chief is the main character they wanted for the cake.

I took inspiration from the background, blue with mountains and clouds.

Happy 16th Birthday Patrick!
