Roller Disco Party

Flashback!

Roller Skates!  Wow, how many years since you've seen a pair of roller skates, roller blades maybe, but skates!?

Disco!  Complete with Saturday Night Fever dancers and a glitter ball for flashing lights!

Tie Dye!  What 70's themed birthday would be complete without some of the rainbow swirls!?

This is a topsy turvy style cake, iced in buttercream.
Bottom tier is buttercream, handpainted for tie dye effect.
Middle tier has chocolate dancers.
Top tier is RKT covered in fondant, not cake.

This was a fun challenge!

Pink Skull

Anna Grace's mom wasn't too sure about the fact that her daughter wanted a pirate party....
UNTIL they found this great partyware!

Pink Pirate Skulls!

So cute!

The things that jumped out at me:
Of course the pirate skull,
the black border with crossed bones,
and the quilted pattern with hearts on the plates.

Soooo.... I incorporated all those items and this is what the finished product looked like!

Cake is iced in buttercream with fondant stripes, and hand created chocolate skulls, names and number!

I love the color combination and how it all came together!

Thanks for looking!

JB lives in Buttercream!

I'm sure you've heard of this kid, he's kind of popular.  He sings and of course all the girls are in love with him!

JB....Justin Bieber!

New party themes are always exciting to me.  But I had never attempted to create a "real person" in cake form until.....

JB themed birthday requests started coming in!

So I found a picture of JB on the WWW and created a FBCT of his likeness.

This cake has the lyrics of his famous "Baby" song around the sides

Purple and black seem to be the signature colors for JB.  And girls love zebra stripes....sooooo

Piano keys go all around the sides of this cake!

If I get another request for a JB cake, I think I'll try a different picture of him!

Something cool.....my photo editing software "recognizes" faces and asks for you to tag the person...... it wanted me to tag this face!

Mod Monkey

Mod Monkey is this totally cute party theme!

You can find it in pink for girls or blue for boys.

This is the pink version for Maddy's 2nd birthday!

Cake is iced in buttercream with a FBCT monkey face and fondant accents.

Pink and green polka dots go so nicely together!

Happy Birthday Monkey....uh... Maddy!

Hippie Chick

This partyware theme is called "Hippie Chick".

It definitely has a 70's retro feel to it.

I love how trends ebb and flow, they always come back!
I guess sometimes that is good....shutter shades.  And sometimes that is bad....bell bottoms.
Sorry bell bottoms, I do not love the pictures from my youth when you were there.

I had a difficult time getting a good picture on this....alas a photographer I am not.

Although I wish I could get another 8 hours in each day and I would devote that time to learning how to take the best pictures!

Iced in chocolate buttercream (boy howdy do you wish you could smell this deliciousness!) with fondant accents.

What will the next trend be for kids these days?

Tinkerbell's Party Dress

Doll cakes.....who doesn't remember having a doll cake when they were a kid?
(Well maybe a few guys out there, but I'm sure they were AT a party that had a doll cake at some point in time!)

So much fun...I can eat this AND I get a toy when it's all said and done.....SIGN ME UP MOM!

Tinkerbell is one of the new "Disney Princesses" so I wanted to give her a beautiful party dress to wear!

I got the tinkerbell doll at one of those large discount chain stores...I'm sure you know one of those.
All parts of her that are inside the cake are safely covered in saran wrap.

She is iced in buttercream with a fondant bodice and flowing train of petals/leaves down the back.

Purple and green is such a lovely combination for this party dress!

Her wings came with the doll....believe me I would love to figure out a way to make edible see through wings for next time!
Of course I saved her clothes and packaged them in a cute little cupcake box for the birthday girl to dress her up after the party!

Minnie Mouse goes Topsy Turvy!

Topsy turvy, mad hatter, wonky....
whatever name you use....
it makes a great cake statement at your party!

Nothing better than having your cake be the centerpiece at your party so you don't have to create an additional decoration for the table.

Brooklyn had a Minnie Mouse theme for her 2nd birthday and this is the cake for the table!

You should have seen all the minnie inspired decorations and treats they had!  Wish I had a picture to share with you!

Buttercream iced with fondant and chocolate decorations!
And I think you'll find a coordinating ribbon on the edge of your cake board really finishes the cake nicely!

Have a great day!

40 and Colorful!

Sometimes turning 40 isn't all that fun...

BUT, if your husband is throwing you a surprise party and getting a special cake for such occasion.... it might actually be okay turning 40.

So here is a picture of the plates/napkins they were using for the party.

LOVE LOVE LOVE!

The things that jumped out at me right away...
1. the black with the multi colored circles....gotta do that!
2. the big 40
3. polka dots AND stripes
4. the COLORS!

So here is my cake version of the above plate.

Oh, I hope she was surprised!

Pink Polka Dots

Hot pink and black are all the rage right now in the tween/teen girl world!

Seems I get many requests to use this color combination.

I was given only that request.  Must include hot pink and black.

So I guess I felt in a polka dot mood!

Iced in buttercream with fondant accents!
Happy Birthday Madison!

Olivia the Pig

Olivia the Pig.

Olivia the Birthday Girl.

Seems like a perfect birthday party theme!

I can't say that I've ever read an Olivia book...(I have boys), and I know I've never watched the new show.... (again I have boys AND they're "too old for those BABY shows MOM!")

I do know what she looks like from book jackets.

So cake has to include pinks, reds, and black.  Of course you can't forget Olivia herself!  And the sweet red bows she wears?  Of course!  Polka dots?  Certainly!

This cake is completely inspired by chocmocakes (she's my cake IDOL!)

Happy birthday Olivia!

Tangled Tower

For everyone that remembers, I only have boys at my house.  So when I get cool girl themed cakes, I jump at the chance....but sometimes I have to do research to make sure I have the details.

There is pretty much NO WAY that my boys would sit through the movie Tangled!  So I had to resort to internet research on this.

Mom specifically requested a 3D tower, so you know I was all over that idea!

Mostly the base is the cake that was served at the party.  There is a small cake that makes up the bulk of the tower top.  The tower itself has a pvc pipe to maintain the integrity and also to hold the weight of the top.  Then I used RKT (rice krispie treats) to build the shape into what you see.  Then it is covered with buttercream icing.
The very top of the tower is a sugar cone upside down and covered with fondant shingles.

My favorite part is her long golden hair flowing out the window and down around the base of the tower.

I have since viewed the movie....and believe it or not the boys watched too!  :O

Thanks for stopping by!

Strawberry Shortcake

This is Strawberry Shortcake!  At least this is what she looked like when I was a kid.
Aww, isn't she cute?
Does it bring you back a few years? (Let's not discuss how many...ahem)

As time marches on, so does Strawberry Shortcake!  I love that she is spanning generations and all little girls still have the chance to play with a "scented" doll.
Remember that smell?

Look how her fashion sense has updated, but still a bonnet and cute short curly hair.

Here is the newest evolution of Strawberry Shortcake!
She's let her hair grow and it seems to be more of a beret than a bonnet upon her locks!

No matter her look, she is still a great subject to have when making a party theme choice!

So let's see what we need at the party???

How about some cookie favors?  I took inspiration from one of my favorite cookiers (Sweet Sugar Belle) and the strawberries found on the party plates

Cupcakes are always the FUN and easy way to serve all the kids!

But of course you need a cake to put candles in and sing the Happy Birthday song to!

I made some buttercream vines with flowers and some miniature fondant strawberries for the sides of the cake.

Thanks for hanging around so long with us Strawberry Shortcake!
And Happy Birthday Kaitlyn Marie!

Monkey Love!

I really love opportunities to make 3D cakes.  It is fun to visualize it in my mind and then see it "come to life" in cake!

I had a request for a monkey/gorilla cake.  Madison really loves watching the "Tori and Dean" show and wanted to have a 3D gorilla cake like one from the birthday party of Tori and Dean's son Liam's first birthday.

I don't mind getting inspiration from other cake artists, in fact there are so many talented people out there that I wish I could be like!  But I knew that the cake from the show wasn't near cute enough for Madison.

I found this picture on Celebrity Moms blog

Of course Madison didn't need to have such a large cake, so I had to scale down and of course I set forth with my plans.

CUTE, he has to be CUTE!

This gorilla/monkey is a cake body and a rice krispie head.  Covered in chocolate buttercream icing and fondant accents.

Here is a close up of the banana he is holding.

Thanks Madison for such a great plan!  I hope you had the best birthday ever!

Hello....Kitty!

Popular trends seem to always find their way back around.

I remember Hello Kitty when I was a kid.  I had friends that collected everything "kitty" and it seems like it was all in miniature.  Soooo cute!

I was so happy to be asked to make a hello kitty cake and the design was up to me!

The cake board is covered with scrapbooking paper and I made the bottom tier to match.  Of course the top tier is all about "kitty love" and it wouldn't be complete without kitty's iconic bow!

Hello, Kitty!

Topsy Turvy Zebra...again....and again....and again!

This seems to be one of the most popular designs around here lately!

Each time I try and change it up a little, different colors, different toppers.

Stars on wires.

Curly fondant ribbons
Hot pink and black combination
Hot pink and lime green
Turquoise and Chocolate Stripes!

I learn new tricks each time I make this cake.  I love that even though each cake starts with the same basic design, each one is unique on it's own.  Hand cut striping allows for no two cakes ever being the same.

Gymnastics Girl

Caitlin is BIG into gymnastics....she's serious about this stuff!

So for her birthday she wanted a gymnastics themed cake.  I asked her mom what her favorite event was and she said she was a "beam" girl.....and her favorite colors are pink and purple.
So I made a chocolate ribbon beam around the bottom edge of the cake and made several purple sillohuettes of different moves.

What a fun cake!  Hope you had a great birthday Caitlin!

Spa Birthday

It's hard to believe how quickly time passes.  It seems only last year I was making Avery's 10th birthday cake and here we are already on the 13th!

How quickly they grow up!

Avery was having a "spa" themed party.  I think the girls were getting facials and having their nails done.
When she was coming up with ideas for cakes, she found one with cucumbers and said hers needed to have cucumbers!
This cake is 100% edible.
The "face" is a chocolate mold, the face cream is pink buttercream and the cucumbers and towel are made from fondant!

Happy 13th Birthday Avery!

Dora and Boots

Dora and Boots!

What a perfect pair!  I have done many Dora cakes over the years and I try and make each one unique.

Dora and Boots are a FBCT placed on the cake after the background was done in buttercream and crushed graham crackers!

Daisy Cake Tutorial

You may have seen the 3D daisy cake I did a few weeks ago.  When I received a request for another one, I thought I would take pictures to show you how I turned a 2 layer 12" round cake into a 3D daisy!

So first imagine the crumb coated cake as round....

Then I measured the circumference around the outer edge to determine how large each section should be.

Once I mark out each section, I cut a small triangle on each line and turn the triangle piece around to make the tip of each petal.

Here is the top view of the triangles.
Then use buttercream to attach the pieces and fill in the gaps.  I had to trim the tips off the very ends since my board wasn't quite large enough.
Again, this is the top view.

And here is Ella's Ladybug Daisy Cake!

I used a different design and different colors for this design....you know how I don't like to do the EXACT cake more than once!

This could definitely work for a snowflake or any other kind of multi petal flower!

Mani~Pedi Party

For her 11th birthday, Isabella is having a Mani-Pedi party!  How much fun is that?

Getting together with all your girlfriends and getting all your nails done?

Her mom told me light blue was her favorite color and wanted me to include polish bottles and other girly things.  She said that Isabella really likes to watch the "cake shows" on TV and she definitely wanted to have fondant on her cake.

I made the polish bottles from fondant and personalized them for Isabella.  One is "I" and the other is "11".  I have a chocolate mold for the shoes.  I thought they would look nicer than a foot!
Hope you have a wonderfully fun party!
